From Apprentice to Managing Director

Paul Young - Managing Director. Career Progression Story At TP Fire. Fire and Security Career Journey

Paul’s Journey at TP Fire & Security

Paul’s story at TP Fire & Security is one of growing up with the business and learning the ropes from the ground up. He’s been around since he was 14, starting out by helping where he could and gradually working his way through almost every role in the company. Today, as Managing Director, Paul leads with a very practical, hands-on approach shaped by real experience, strong family values, and a firm belief in doing things properly.

We caught up with Paul to talk about how it all began, what stuck with him along the way, and how those early lessons still guide the business today.

You’ve been around TP Fire & Security since you were 14. What do you remember from those early days?

Honestly, I just remember being around it all the time — engineers, vans, tools, paperwork — long before I really understood what any of it was. I was on sites, helping out where I could, watching how people worked, and seeing how much pride everyone took in doing a good job. I even remember ringing the office to speak to my dad, Terry — this was before mobile phones — and Kerry Clarke answering the phone. She’s still here today.

What were you actually doing back then, and what did it teach you?

It was very basic stuff at first — labouring, helping engineers, loading vans, tidying up on site. But it didn’t take long to realise this industry is all about detail and responsibility. Fire safety isn’t just another job; people’s lives and businesses depend on it. At the time, it started as summer work to earn a bit of pocket money, but it quickly turned into something more serious.

You started as an apprentice — what lessons have stuck with you?

The big one is that there are no shortcuts. Experience matters. You can’t rush learning in this industry. Doing the job properly, sticking to standards, and understanding why compliance matters — even when no one’s watching — are things that stay with you.

How has working your way up shaped how you lead today?

Because I’ve done the jobs myself, I understand the pressures people are under day to day. I’m very hands-on in how I lead. I don’t believe in asking anyone to do something I wouldn’t do myself, and I’d much rather have honest conversations and strong teamwork than worry about titles or hierarchy.

Was there a moment when you knew this was the career for you?

Yes, definitely. Moving into more technical roles, like fire risk assessments, was a turning point. Once you really understand the responsibility involved and how much trust clients place in you, you realise this isn’t just a job. It’s something you want to commit to long term.

What did you learn from seeing the business grow from the inside?

You get a real appreciation for every part of the business and everyone in it. Growth feels very different when you’ve lived through it step by step. It’s taught me to be patient, realistic, and to focus on building strong foundations rather than growing too fast.

Your Dad founded the business. What values did he pass on?

Doing the right thing, even when it’s difficult, and never cutting corners. He always said your reputation is everything in this industry, and once it’s damaged, it’s hard to get back. He started the business because he could see others weren’t doing it properly — he wanted this to be the company that did.

How do you keep that legacy going while still moving forward?

For me, it’s not about standing still. It’s about holding on to those core values while adapting to new regulations, new technology, and changing client expectations. The aim is to protect what the business stands for, while making sure it’s ready for the future.

Is there anything your Dad used to say that still guides you today?

One thing that’s always stuck with me is simple: if you wouldn’t be comfortable standing up and defending it, don’t do it. That way of thinking still shapes decisions around quality, compliance, and ethics every day.
