A 30-Year Career at TP Fire & Security

Jamie McVeigh, Small Works Manager, in front of a White Van. Jamie has had a 30 year career at TP Fire & Security.

Meet Jamie McVeigh

Jamie is a Small Works Manager who has been part of the TP Fire & Security team for an incredible 30 years. Starting out as a young apprentice, Jamie has built a long and rewarding career grounded in technical skill, strong relationships, and a genuine sense of purpose. In this interview, he reflects on his early days, how the industry has evolved, and what has kept him loyal to the company for three decades.

What first made you choose an electrical apprenticeship at such a young age?

I remember my Grandad saying to me ‘you wanna learn a trade, boy!’

I was drawn to an electrical apprenticeship at a young age because I liked to understand how things work. I learned best by actually doing it and seeing how problem-solving, safety, and technical skill all come together.

Do you remember your very first day at TP Fire & Security? What was it like?

I remember it very well. It was very different to stacking shelves at Sainsbury’s on a Saturday.

Was there a moment early on when you realised this could be a long-term career for you?

Yes, very early on. It didn’t feel like work because I was doing something I enjoyed.

How did the company support you as you progressed from apprentice to where you are now?

As an apprentice, engineers and management supported me through training, mentoring, and gradually increasing responsibility and as an engineer I was encouraged to apply for a more senior role.

What skills do you think were most important in helping you move up through the ranks?

I would say relationship building. Whether that is with clients or colleagues.

Were there any people who mentored you or had a big influence on your career?

The members of our Small Works team. I have known Sherral, Mark, Kerri and Matt, all for over 20 years. We constantly push each other to be better with a bit of banter along the way.

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in fire and security systems over the last 30 years?

There were very few analogue addressable systems about when I first started. 3 wire systems or single zone conventional systems were the norm. Giving no location text as to where the fire or fault was. Today, we install and maintain large multi loop network fire alarm systems across vast sites.

How have advances in technology changed the way you work day to day?

The internet has made a massive difference. Receiving emails, drawings, specifications, or manuals at the click of a button is taken for granted.

What do you think has kept you at TP Fire & Security for three decades?

The people. I always felt part of a team whether that be as an engineer or office based. And purpose. What we do matters. Knowing that the work we do helps keep people and buildings safe makes the hard work worthwhile.

What advice would you give to a 17-year-old starting an apprenticeship today?

Pay attention, listen.

Looking back, what are you most proud of in your career?

Getting BS 7671 Inspection & Testing qualification. It was something I tried really hard at, and to be honest, I found it difficult. I really didn’t think I would pass the exam so I was very proud when I did.

Ready to build a career that really matters?

At TP Fire & Security, you’re not just doing a job. You’re learning a trade, building real skills, and helping protect people and places every single day. Whether you’re starting out as an apprentice or bringing years of experience with you, you’ll be supported by a close-knit team that values hard work, curiosity, and progression. We invest in training, encourage growth, and promote from within, because long careers don’t happen by accident.

If you want hands-on work, clear development paths, and the satisfaction of knowing what you do makes a difference, we’d love to hear from you.

Take the first step today.
